After Germany attacks, women take self-defense class in Wiesbaden

WIESBADEN, Germany — Reported sexual assaults in Cologne and other German cities on New Year’s Eve led a couple in the Wiesbaden military community to offer a free self-defense seminar over the weekend for female service-members, civilians and spouses.

Rachael Pecoraro, manager of the Wiesbaden fitness center, and her husband, Steven Rovelstad, who has a background in martial arts, held the class to teach women how to fight back in the event of an attack.

Wiesbaden’s Biggest Losers win big in fitness center challange

A milestone for a motivated group of Wiesbaden community members was reached as participants and winners of the Family and MWR “Biggest Loser” program were recognized during a ceremony at the Fitness Center Aug. 15.

Ten-weeks ago, 16 contestants divided into two teams took on the “Biggest Loser” weight loss challenge to transform their lives through physical fitness, health and education with the top ‘losers’ from each team earning a trip for two to the French Riviera and Cinque Terre.

Pecoraro and other trainers, assigned to Family and MWR’s Sports and Fitness provided weekly training sessions that tested the mental and physical limitations of the participants resulting in a total group weight loss for the program of 159.26 pounds and 75.4 total inches.
